The musical weapon.

After about 2 months it's now like a whole new world to get into blogging again :D That's because of this long gap between successive writings. The gap has to be diminished. Plan பண்ணி பண்ணுவோம் இனி!!!!

திரு நா.முத்துகுமார் அவர்களுக்கு எனது கண்ணீர் அஞ்சலியினை உறித்தாக்கிக் கொள்வதோடு அவர் பாடல் வரிகளை பருவ காலத்தில் கேட்டு வளர்ந்து இப்போது அவ்வாறான பாடல்களை கேட்க முடியாமல் நிற்கதியின்றி வாடும் என்னைப் போன்ற அத்தனை ரசிகர்களுக்கு அனுதாபங்களையும் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்!

Self Evaluation

Blog No : 21 Genre : Probably narration kinda stuff. I don't know exactly :P Duration of work : 6 hours (approx) [ Includes preparation, penning down, editing and re-revising ] Verdict : Lengthy and quite boring. Boost urself while reading and there are few useful information guaranteed!!!

Even much before actions and languages came into the play humans have utilized sounds for their communication. In this way the connection between humans and sounds go incredibly longer. Even animals have been using sounds for various purposes like detecting the prey, signaling the presence, mating etc.

Globally sounds have been, being and will be an important entity in all living creatures.

Getting back!!! Why should I have to signify sounds?? Simple, sounds forms the elementary structure for any music. And we humans have created a weapon with these sounds. I say again it's a weapon! Yes music is a weapon. How music can be a weapon ??? Continue reading :)

முத்தமிழ் என்பது நாம் யாவரும் அறிந்ததே. "இயல் இசை நாடகம்". அதென்ன முத்தமிழ்? தமிழ் போன்றதொரு தொன்மை வாய்ந்த மொழி அதன் உருவம் சிதையாமல் வளர ஒரு உந்து கோல் ( a medium-since any language needs a mode of commuting) தேவை. ஆக இப்படியான ஒரு மொழியை பரப்ப நம் முன்னோர்களுக்கு தேவைப்பட்ட கருவி தான் "இயலும் இசையும் நாடகமும்". இசையின் முக்கியத்துவம் தமிழ் போன்றதொரு மொழியின் வளர்ச்சிக்கு நம்பிக்கைக்குரிய பாத்திரமாய் இருப்பதன் மூலம் புலப்படுகிறது. இது அந்த காலம்!!!

இப்போது YOLO generation மக்களுக்கும் இசைக்குமான சம்பந்தத்தை நான் கூறி யாரும் அறியப்போவதில்லை. Rhythm And Poetry (RAP) தொடங்கி Hip Hop சென்று இன்று கருவியின்றி சப்தம் உருவாக்கி் தொழில்நுட்பத்தின் உச்சானி கொம்பில் வாழும் இவர்களுக்கு headphones மட்டுமே உலகம் (என்னையும் சேர்த்து). A 1200 jbl-T200 headphones gives immense pleasure and relief than anything else!!! and to this extent music has emphasized its importance in human life.

இப்படியாக நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பும் பின்புமாய் நம்மோடு பயணிக்கும் பயணிக்கவிருக்கும் ஒரு கருவியாக ஆன்மாவாக இசை விளங்குவதை யாராலும் மறுக்க இயலாது. So music is a weapon.

I don't know how many of your childhood had a music concert (especially carnatic music concert) but I had few. The only thing I wondered is the tapping action done by both the singer as well as the listeners. I inquired my mom " why u all tapping your fingers all together ?? " Probably most of you would have got this in reply " தாளம் டா " . But I'm lucky to have my genius mom shutting my mouth off at that time since she wanted to listen the songs completely. Later she came out and gave me this as her explanation " அப்பி (she calls me likewise, a nickname) அங்க பாடறவள் தொடங்கி பக்க வாத்யம் வர எல்லாருக்கும் ஒரு timing இருக்கு!!! அத stage ல சரியா follow பண்ணினாதான் சுத்தமான சப்தம் நமக்கு கேட்கும். இல்லன பிஷகான அபஸ்வரமா தான் கேட்கும்!!! அதுக்கு பேரு தாளம் தட்டுதல். A method of time keeping" She's brilliant right ?? Being her son I threw her even more brilliant one !!! " அம்மா அப்போ அங்க வாசிக்கிறவங்க மட்டும் தாளம் போட்டா போறாதா?? நீங்க எல்லாம் ஏன் சும்மா தாளம் போடுறீங்க??" She would have decided to leave me alone back at home for other concerts from then!!! Still she replied "கண்ணா அங்க இருக்கறவால்ல பாதி பேருக்கு மேல என்னென்ன ராகம் தாளம்னு தெரியலனாலும் அப்படி gimmicky actions செய்தாகனும். இல்லனா அது கௌரவக் குறைச்சல் ஆகிடும். அதெல்லாம் தெரிஞ்ச மிச்ச எல்லாரும் அத follow செய்யறாங்க. They just enjoy following the band and the others are simply pretending as if they know "

This next question from me took her to the peek of her anger.

" அம்மா அவங்க நடிக்கிறாங்கனா நீயும் தாளம் தட்டிக்கிட்டு இருந்தியே?? உனக்கு ராகம் தாளம் எல்லாம் நிஜமா தெரியுமா ? அப்படி தெரிஞ்சா எனக்கு முழுசா சொல்லிக்குடு!!!"

Her face reddened !!! Her words after this are as follows :

"அப்பி!!! What are you thinking about your forefathers??? (And she explained few of my grand father's and great grandfather's work as bhagavathar and the family's legacies,then she continued her lessons) There are 7 different types of swarams(-sounds) in music. They form the basic notes for music like alphabet for any language. So these seven sounds (sa, ri,ga,ma,pa,da,ni) can be given with two formats (uruvagas) in the increasing tones(ஸரிகமபதநி-ஸ) called as ஆரோகனம் and the same in decreasing tones (ஸ-நிதபமகரிஸ)called ஔரோகனம். Now again to have a timely influence elders made so many experiments centuries ago and brought the concept of 'Thalam' in to that. So a note can be extended in according to the thalam. Thalam is simply like "மாத்திரை" for tamil words (like how long a word should be pronounced for example அ- 1மாத்திரை ஆ- 2 மாத்திரை).

Finally, The equation goes like this Swarams (in either orders) + Thalams (timing) = Ragam.

Ragam is again simply quoted as " the combination of swarams and thalams" which you would have learnt in your mathematics. The swarams were arranged and rearranged in numerous orders with respect to time(thalam) by the elders so that they form a clear and blissful music and were given with name in particular. They also taught these ragas to their offsprings and passed this musical phenomena. These ragas have so many practical effects. "

I interrupted here and asked for what's that "the practical effects"? What all a sound or music can do practically?

She calmly replied " As your science says, I agree that everything in this Earth has been inter connected. Likewise music also has direct impact on nature (five basic elements) and it is the most important invention of human so far according to me. Music though intangible has its own power. Some music makes the man to cry, some to realize mistakes, some makes happy, some gives pride!!! so music is a gift from god to mankind it's a clue for peaceful life".

Since she went to a totally different topic and her answers were so haphazardous, I again brought her into the track.

"Amma say something about how they believe the concepts like பாடினா மழை வரும்??? " actually this was the question I taught she will answer for practical effects!!!! But she went apart this!!! So I redirected her.

Believe me I was really struck by her reply.

"இந்த கேள்விக்கு நான் முன்னாடியே பதில் சொல்லிட்டேன். I'll again give more examples which follows the same principle இசை - இசைதல், ஒப்புதல், acceptance.

In your childhood days I used to make u sleep by singing "மலர்ந்தும் மலராத பாதி மலர் போல" song which is basically a "தாலாட்டு" kind of category. so all these தாலாட்டு songs comes under "Nilambari Raga" which generally causes people to sleep. As I said earlier, the music makes u to accept the sleep.

(Note:The above fact is scientifically proven.)

Not only in humans!!! there's a raga called "Punnagavaralli" which makes the snakes to adhere to the music that human used to bring snakes within ambit. மகுடி is the instrument that suits well for this Punnagavaralli ragam and so snakes are controlled by that particular instrument. So here the music makes the snakes to accept the controller.

(Note: The above fact is scientifically proven again.)

Similarly the rain concept. The ragam that causes rain is "அமிர்தவர்ஷினி" Here the nature itself makes the rain or water flow in a controlled manner. Here the nature accepts the musical vibes.

(Fact again proven scientifically!!!!)

Similarly Kalyani a well known raga which though possess some kind of slow and melancholy in it makes the listener to feel happy!! it's a kind of controversial raga!!!! There are more such ragas that makes the crops to grow faster, that makes cow to get more milk (and we mock actor RAMARAJAN on showing this in his movies)

So music has the power to control anybody and anything here in this world".

She finished.

That friday evening she took me to one of her friends to teach me carnatic basics😂 Though I escaped stating my school timings and exams without realizing the importance of carnatic music. #எவ்வளவு பெரிய தவறு பண்ணீட்டோம்!!!!!

What should I say more after this??? I thought music is after all a kind of time pass thingy. We put in our headphones to avoid the advices from elders, to find for a good escapism, if we are broken, if we feel merry and so many such reasons.

Ain't all these are the only things music could do in our life???

Think!!! Realize!!!

Still it's not late!!! Try to learn this and get immersed in to the musical flood.

Make your descendants to learn music!!! Classical music especially!!! If not fully atleast to some extent till he/she realizes the real impact of music in their life.

Musical blog!!!! on seeing this people in my circumscribe would have expected me to speak about Prides of AR Rahman and thereby defaming Ilaiyaraja or comparing Santhosh Narayanan with Anirudh. I didn't do that because music is not limited to them. And it's not only them who should give us!!! Realizing this I purposely omitted them!!! இசை - உன்மையில் கடவுளைப் போல தூனிலும் துரும்பிலும் உள்ளது!!!

Ah finally I must thank my mom for this :D Her words years ago were useful for this blog now!! Again delighted that she enthusiastically agreed to release this blog. Scholarly mom - Lucky son -Thanks almighty. !!!!
